Music Marketing Agency Interview on Music Promotion Campaigns for Independent artists in the Modern Music Business

We interviewed Music Marketing Agency AMWorld Group about running campaigns and what the hottest strategies in the music business working right now are. Please enjoy and as always leave your perspective in the comments section below.

Q1: Would you say that for artists the name of the game is run campaigns and grow your career and your brand independently?

A: Running a music promotion campaign to establish brand awareness and recognition is one of the most critical factors to an artist’s success. If you have a cohesive brand and significant media coverage, potential fans are more easily attracted to your music because they can see that you are drawing interest from the media. If you want to reach new audiences as an artist, it’s essential to get your music in front of the right people. With a music promotion campaign, you’re able to start creating more awareness around your brand by getting your material in front of genre-specific fans who are likely to connect with your style of music. On top of a music promotion campaign, we recommend engaging in other artist activities such as promotional performances, industry networking, and engagement with fans. This will help to keep the momentum going on your campaign and to get live interaction with the people you want to continue to follow your career as you keep moving forward.

Q2: How many campaigns do you run every year? Please list out the different types and the scopes of them?

A: We run thousands of campaigns of various types every year. Our starter campaigns include just essential services, and we include other helpful items and additional coverage from there. We invite readers to learn more about the types and scope by visiting the following page: www.amworldgroup.com/music-pr

Q3: How many artists that you work with come to you with a strategy already and then hire you to execute?

A: Clients may have an overall strategy in place for their careers, but we create and execute our game plans when it comes to the services we provide. Our campaign process is something we’ve built based on our long-term experience of working with thousands of artists, so it’s important that we stick to what we know and lean on our expertise while effectively collaborating with our clients to make sure we reach our goals. We recommend for artists to take time to do their research and to ensure that their material is prepared before starting a PR campaign; it’s important for the artist to know what they’re getting into and to have goals in mind. That way, it’s a smooth collaboration as we handle the nitty-gritty details of the campaign and as we help to guide the artist towards the success they’re shooting for.

Q4: What kinds of stats or analytics should an artist or musician in the modern music business be paying attention to?

A: Some important modern metrics including streams, social and playlist followers, shares and mentions, page rank, and shazam's. We can quickly find singles that are working well by looking at people's reactions to them. Many of these metrics are often connected — your social media presence is often a huge factor in your number of streams. If you’re working to increase your following on social media and engage with those followers, you’ll start building a foundational fanbase who will download your songs and consistently listen to them in rotation on their playlists and music libraries. So it’s very important to recognize the correlation between different mediums and different types of promotion so that you will know where to spend your time and money.

Q5: How important is cash flow for running a modern music business?

A: We think cash flow is always an essential factor when it comes to running any form of business, including a music company. Many people make the mistake of thinking that fame and success in the music industry happen based on luck and decent music. Most of the mainstream artists you see and listen to have put a lot of time and money into their careers and have worked their way up gradually. It’s not something that happens overnight or without some sacrifice.

Q6: How should artists think about the growth of their careers that you'd say most of the ones you see aren't understanding?

A: Building a successful career is a long term project that takes a lot of work and investment. Many artists think they can release a single or two, and everything will fall into place from there. It takes time and consistent efforts to build a strong presence. Consistently performing, engaging with fans, networking — there is a lot more that goes into it other than just making good music. You have to give people the chance to hear your music by constantly promoting it and getting coverage.

Q7: Can artists get email addresses from users on any of the streaming services yet? Are they sharing that data with artists yet, how do artists go about getting that kind of data from all these services?

A: We don't believe that would be a good idea for them to do. The best way to reach playlist curators is to go through an agency like AMW that already has established an extensive network of curators for different genres.

Q8: What's the hottest marketing strategy that's working right now? Playlists, sponsorships/partnerships, email marketing, pr, etc.

A: From our experience, a combination of both PR outreach, Playlist Promotion, and Paid Ads will yield the best results. We recommend all of these things because, for example, Spotify playlist promotion can yield better results if you’re also working to increase your reach through a PR campaign, gaining more fans which leads to more streams and monthly listeners. Paid ads will get your brand out in front of new audiences, but you need to have reviews, features, interviews, and a social media presence for people to be able to connect with your brand and your music. Hiring a professional agency will put you on the right track because they already have the expertise and the network you need to run successful campaigns.
