The Levels of Fanhood...

The key to Modern Music Marketing is the fundamental understanding that your Fan is not a passive player in your career…

They are an integral part of your music business, as they represent the other side of the coin, they also make up the majority of your tribe.

You are just one person after all and (hopefully) your tribe consists of more than that.

But just because someone hears your record, says they ‘like’ you, or even signs up for your mailing list-DOESN’T make them a FAN.

Thus, it’s time we had the talk.

I’m talking about The Levels of Fan-hood.

When simplified it goes a little something like this…

EVERYONE is a POSSIBLE Fan.

This does not make them a Fan, nor does it mean they will ever become one.

The first goal in Modern Music Marketing is to get in front of Possible Fans, and then transform them into the next level of Fanhood by converting them into a Potential Fan. These are individuals that have raised their hand and signed up/or subscribed to your mailing list because they are interested in hearing more from you, what you are doing/creating, and may also be interested in going deeper with you, supporting you somewhere along the journey of your career.

Now as soon as you have converted a Possible Fan into a Potential Fan they immediately enter the delicate and temporary stage of New Potential. You want to deliver on your promises, keep them active and make sure they stay engaged…. If they DO NOT remain engaged for this window of time you will disconnect, the engagement cycle will have been broken, and you may lose them as an active potential.

THEY CAN BE REACTIVATED. It can be done, but it’s much easier to keep them engaged and help them progress to the next level of fan-hood. The next natural step is to make their first purchase of your material, thus entering into the New Fan stage of fan-hood.

Those who disengage with you and your content past the threshold of time you set for active potentials, will be labeled as either inactive potentials, or casual fans.

The New Fan stage, much like the New Potentials stage, is a vital and fleeting doorway to the next level-that you must treat with care and concern. It’s a temporary, make or break time period for you to convert New Fans all the way into your Tribe as True Fans.

True Fans are loyal fans and supporters who’ve bought your stuff multiple times and have been with you for at least 6 months.

Your New Fans are your Future, but your True Fans are how you build a strong tribe and community around what you’re doing/saying/all about.

Your True Fans should be treated with the care and appreciation they deserve, and if you do that right, you will convert them to the final level of fan-hood. The mac daddy, the grand puba, the creme-de-la creme… Ah the Super Fan.

Behold. Super Fans carry an infectious level of enthusiasm and authentic connection to your brand and what you’re doing. They will tell the others. They will be recognized by you, and must be rewarded for their support and overall awesomeness.

They are the ultimate level of fan hood/actualization.

Super Fans are what you want your New Potentials and your New Fans to aspire to!

They should be publicly praised, and treated with the most access and interaction with your brand. Failing to acknowledge and reward Super Fans is a universal injustice and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. After all, creating the journey to Super Fandom is what your brands job is. This concludes the 30,000 foot briefing on the Levels of Fan-Hood.

I hope that was helpful, and that you learned something today.

However, I’m quite limited in how much I can get into-given the average attention span, and the little time I have here with you…

Understanding the Hierarchy of Fan-dom, (aka the Levels of Fan-Hood) is important to know, but it’s just the end result of the process. It’s the front end of the product. What you don’t see (because it’s too long for most people to casually absorb as free content) are the key components that make it all work. The gears and levers that connect everything together and go into producing the results you want with growing your career and fan base.
