The Independent Artists State of the Union: Not The Digital Music Revolution, The ARTISTS Revolution.

The Music Industry evolved, and it’s time that Artists evolved with it.

Well, The Modern Music Industry is here…

Great!

Ok. So… What exactly are Artists supposed to do, not do, or do differently-in result?

An Artist’s Job description has certainly evolved, but how exactly does our modern music business landscape change what we actually need to focus on, how we prioritize, and the way we build our careers in specific? That seems to be the question on the tip of everyone's tongue.

The rules and the landscape have changed. Fundamentally. forever… but what does that really mean for you, the independent artist/musician?

What should you and I be doing on a day to day, week to week basis-and how will we know if we are hitting our targets?

One thing is for sure, you must have targets-if you want to hit them.

But what should you actually be spending your limited time and resources on?

Sure there are an endless array of new tools and technologies available, but do you confidently feel you know how to use them?

Snarky music journalists and music industry pundits incessantly discuss new angles on music streaming services yet overlook the real solution for artists and the industry. What's worse is that it is standing right in front of us.

We don't need another general roundup of all the activities involved in an Independent Artists career. Every pseudo expert nowadays eagerly weighs in to publish their predictions so that they can feel good about telling everyone (and no one) I told ya so.

Meanwhile, I think we are almost entirely missing the boat here.

None of these modern tools are of any significance, offer any tangible value to the artists community-if we don't know how to use them effectively.

Can you cohesively integrate them into an effective strategy, agnostic of any specific tool or service?

Let me say it again, none of these modern tools are of any significance, offer any tangible value to the artists community-if we don't know how to use them effectively to enhance the value and experience of music for both the fans, and those who work so hard to create it.

Do you know how to use the tools of the modern content creator to grow your career, and build your fan base? Are you getting technology to work FOR you so you can spend more time doing the things you enjoy most like creating and connecting?

Instead of worrying about streaming services and amanda palmer, and royalty rates, and broad abstract industry statistics-we need to remember and focus on what's most important... People. and what we can directly control... How we add value and connect to them. Musicians are smart. Very intelligent people. People who love to wax philosophical about all kinds of things that make for interesting forum discussion, heated debate, yet remain outside of our immediate control.

It's not new tools we need, it's learning how to use the tools we already have-better. It's not getting greater exposure, it's making greater connection. The opportunity isn't going from the top down, getting massive exposure and a trickle stream of interest and sales from some random group of unknown fans... It's building from the bottom up, starting where you are, with what you have now. It's going out and building your first 10 True fans... and then your next ten. and then your first 100. It's understanding what and why these people support you and your content. It's about digging deep, connecting, sharing your stories and resonating with those meant to hear them.

The New Game is about more than just music. It's about multimedia content. It's about utilizing all the communication formats and connecting with your fans across multiple channels. It's about designing and delivering authentic, fan experience pathways that offer fans and supporters sequential ways to go deeper with you, get closer to you, buy more of your stuff.

Over the last several years, the modern music business has really come into it’s own. It has made some major upgrades, though-in our experience it still seems that Artists and Musicians-in general are the last to get the message. Most Artists still don't know how to use Wordpress or Email Marketing, let alone Facebook ads, or Retargeting, or Business Automation.

And it's not their fault.

Let me tell you a quick story.

In early 2004 I arrived at a place called Fort Benning for OSUT One Station Unit Training. Bootcamp. For 16 weeks I underwent Basic Combat Training (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT). It's called One Site Unit Training (OSUT) because Immediately following Basic Training, the unit seamlessly transforms from a BCT unit into an AIT unit. The Army loves their acronyms.

So why is this important you may be thinking...

Well, give me a minute to get it out!

During those four months we were indoctrinated into a completely new lifestyle, we learned piece by piece how to use and maintain each piece of equipment, and we did so until they shined. We tirelessly spent our time and energy training in a variety of scenarios, under a rigorous set of varied conditions-all in order to perform several specific functions. And develop the ability to do so effectively in extreme situations.

We learned a core set of competencies, how to not get kicked in the balls, and the rules of the game.

It was an integrated fusion of training and a cultural philosophy complete with it's own set of values + principles that taught us what we needed to do our job, and to take responsibility for our roles and current condition.

In other words, it didn't just happen on it's own. The Army is a tradition and it's developed over hundreds of years to teach soldiers what they need to know and do to keep each other alive on the battlefield.

No such training, culture, or refined set of rules and principles has ever been created for Artists. The mindsets, the values, the cultural beliefs that have been handed down to us over many generations has never been formally broken down and clarified in this manner. This brings us back to the beginning.

The skills and tools required to take your music career to the next level are no longer a mystery. Specific things, done in a specific way, over a sustained period of time. What's missing isn't another big list of generalized what, we need a is the HOW, and that becomes complex. How can artists receive this kind of integrated training? A cultural, principles based training that's agnostic of any specific tech tool or service? How can we learn and teach the specific new skills we need, and create an optimal environment to develop a highly effective workflow that integrates these added roles and responsibilities into building a long term career doing what we love, on our own terms?

It's quite the question, and it's taken a long time to put that into those words that took me 2 minutes to type just now.

Since 2004 I’ve been working on the answer to that. Hundreds of students and many Private Clients at all levels-along with my own personal experience as an Artist has brought me to a solution that answers all the above. It’s been an Artistic project that has spanned over a decade now and the resulting solution is something I had to build for me and my own career first, and am now proud to share with you. I hope you’ll find it valuable and a gift that helps take your music business to the next level.

After 10 years, i’ve laid down a blueprint for the modern music business in specific pursuit of the most effective way to break the larger industry infrastructure down to it's component parts, and develop a set of proven models, rules and principles, and a framework to tie everything together. Like a canvas where you can see the pieces, and architect your music business to provide you with the lifestyle you want, and the fulfillment you deserve.

The bottom line, the Game-changing reality for Artists and Musicians in the modern music industry is that we, you and I, the ARTISTS and MUSICIANS now have the power to realistically declare our Artistic Independence, stake our claim, and get to work.

To liberate the Music Business!

Anyone willing to commit to doing the work required now has the capacity to create an honest, full-time living doing what they love, on their own terms.

We the people, the Artists and our Fans-fundamentally regain the power and freedom in OUR industry.

There are new skills that you must develop, tools you need to learn how to use, and probably some limiting beliefs lurking just below the surface that could be tricking you or holding you back in some way. Lots of potent content to be released to you soon as we move through this blueprint, take it one step at a time, we must eat this elephant one bite at a time.

QUICK REVIEW: Artists State of the Union - Not The Digital Music Revolution, The Artists Revolution.

So far in the series we've covered a lot of ground as we set the stage for what's to come.

In part 1, Welcome To The Modern Music Business we learned how the the internet leveled the playing field, as the tool and service providers continued to evolve so did the Artists-and we now have a technological and creative utopia. Literally the realistic capacity to create our personal version of paradise doing what we love, on our own terms.

It’s truly time to liberate the music business. This is not the empowerment of digital music run by itunes and spotify... This is the Artists Revolution run by ARTISTS and their FANS.

We're very early in this training series and we've really just scratched the surface... Now that we know where we're coming from, and how the modern music business evolved out of the traditional music business (part 2), we have a much better footing for what and how to utilize all this new knowledge so that when you put it into action in your career you'll be up to speed.

Once again, the name of the new game... the operational axis for the modern music industry hinges on the unique connection and experiences shared by an Artist and their audience/fan base, whereas the traditional music business fluctuated on on indirect relationship with their fans. This was outrageously inefficient and required mass appeal and all sorts of unneeded risk, moving parts, and capital.

The direct to fan relationship is what our flourishing modern marketplace has been focused on making easier and more convenient for us, as well as opening up and creating new ways for musicians to generate revenue.

In part 3, you learned that you absolutely do NOT need a major label record deal, and irregardless of music career trajectory, or the strategies you deploy for doing so-building a loyal fan base from the ground up is the most effective path we've found to a full time living as a musician/artist. This Music Business Growth strategy-we call Grassroots Career Development is how any artist can build a thriving, long term music career in the modern music industry.

What we'll be covering over the next few weeks in the Modern Music Business Blueprint...

  • Development Pathways: MICRO-PROGRESSION. The make or break moments. Pushing past the breaking point and making the breakthroughs.

  • Modern Music Marketing = Focus on connecting with and developing True Fans instead of likes and shares

  • Complete Artist Development = Building a 3Dimensional Brand. An integration of Artistic, Entrepreneurial, and Personal Leadership. Across the 3 perspectives, the trinity of your content business. Strengthening the foundation, making the modern artist breakthroughs, and Avoiding the Technical and Creative Gotcha's. Navigating around and recovering from Creative growth traps.

  • Grassroots Career Development = Strip all excess and dial in on the CORE. A key to mastering your content business, and your digital universe, is an intention and attention to just that... Mastery. Getting it right at the source first. Grassroots authentic. Doesn't take any longer to do something right the first time than it does to try and fix it in the mix.

  • Building a community and leading your tribe: Battle must be won internally first, then at the street level. This is grassroots authentic career development.

  • Building a fan base from scratch: Stepping up and leading your tribe.

A little more background to set the stage

In the next lesson we will be looking at more tangible elements and start getting into the "good stuff," but we first need to look at the biggest challenges we're seeing as well as why you should listen to me and all the content on this site. I want to change the way you think about growing your career, as well as equip you with a proven strategy and an updated Business Model Canvas for the Modern Music business.

In 2012 I wrote the Independent Artist Launch Plan as well as the Musicpreneur Manifesto where I hashed out the individual characteristics and principles that made the difference between those succeeding as Artists in the Modern world, and those who aren’t quite connecting all the dots yet. Feedback was incredible and people seemed to value it.

In the Modern Artists State of the Union training series, I dove deep into uncovering the core problems and challenges that are hurting artists and hindering their growth. To this day I don’t think a more comprehensive examination and definition of the causal-core issues, as well as the surface level symptoms that entangles and stagnates an artist’s growth-exists anywhere.

In the Artists Declaration of Independence I explained how the world, and specifically, how the music industry-has forever evolved, and what that means as it particularly relates to you-and the way you go about growing your career. (*Business model, and the rules of the game.) How Artists declare and claim their independence in the modern music industry.

In January 2013 We released a special ‘beta’ program for dedicated Artists and Musicians in the modern world. The response was fantastic, and we’re extremely proud to have helped so many great people within our community!

Over the last 2 years we’ve closely monitored and listened to all of your feedback to further dial in the specific problem areas and corresponding solutions for Artists like you looking to start, launch, or grow a full-time music business on their own terms.

Unable to find the comprehensive guide that focuses on delivering that and a rock solid blueprint, a complete system designed with a cohesive framework that integrates everything we've learned over the last decade, (one which is specifically designed for Artists and Musicians in the modern music industry) we set out to create it for you. We've since spent a considerable amount of time and effort, and after working with hundreds of students and clients of all types and career level, along with much trial and error in my own Career as an Artist… I think we've achieved just that.

Through much 1-1 coaching, consulting, listening, tweaking, and refining I created this blueprint.

The conversation and response have proven the need for some further clarity, definition, and specialized training on taking your music career to the next level in the modern music industry via leveraging the new tools and technology more effectively, starting with a strategy that is future proof-and is broken down to connect the dots on a practical level.

Over the years we’ve been able to improve upon, strengthen and more effectively design our system to better serve and deliver exactly the training and guidance you need to succeed as an Artist now and for the rest of your career.

If you follow these steps, understand the rules of the new game, I will help you to overcome project overload, overwhelm and confusion. To rise above the Noise, and follow a Proven Path to a Sustainable Career Doing What You Love, on your own terms.

If you have already achieved that, I will show you how to take your Music Business to the next level.

My name is Jamie Leger, Founder of Artists Academy, Editor-in-Chief of Modern Musician Magazine, and Creator of the Music Business Blueprint. On behalf of our team, I want to welcome you to our community.

Quick background on Jamie Leger

I’m just an artist who happened to get started with this stuff from the beginning, ran into a winding set of challenges and obstacles as i launched my content business 10 years ago starting from scratch. Unlike many .coms in the early-mid 2000's, I had started with the intention of building essentially the wikipedia for the modern music business, building a community centered around liberating the music industry. I was also a newly indoctrinated grunt, fresh out of infantry training and jump school with the U.S. Army National Guard.

I started down a long and winding journey where i learned and applied a lot of things that would eventually lead me to my place in the world, doing what I love, on my own terms. I followed a rabbit hole around my passion and area of study-music production and songwriting, my path and my roles evolved over time to lead me to where I’ve been able to get to today.

Today I make my full-time living as a trusted career growth expert for artists and musicians, (aka the Music Business Architect) teaching them how to use the tools, step their game up, turn their content into currency, and build their content business better than a label or 3rd party would or could.

I take a lot of pride in the roles and purpose i've been led to throughout my life, i'm very grateful, but i'm deeply proud to eventually grow into my shoes as the Music Business Architect. A talented idealist putting the runt in grunt-who eventually found out that his ADD laden cartoon mind could do amazing things once he learned how to harness it and think in blueprints. That skill, and a specific set of a few more now pays the bills full time. I'm honored to be a trusted advocate for Artists and Content Creators who don't want to settle, who're willing to put their ass on the line without any guarantees or immediate reward. To patiently hone their crafts, follow and trust that voice within, and courageously deliver their Art, their stories, their truths into the world.

When i say I take a lot of pride in the roles and purpose i've been led to throughout my life, i mean just that. Each lesson i've learned has truly taught me everything i need to do what i was born to do, and each person i've met-each experience that has shaped my character has impacted me and my story. It's an intricate connection of interconnected stories and i feel blessed to get to share them with you.

I hope that my journey and the knowledge and insight you get from me will enlighten, expand, and inspire the amazing out of you.

I’ve spent the last 10 years fully immersed in the content business as an independent artist and content creator. Over the last decade i've built my own from the ground up, progressively developing skills and expertise in every facet, and over the last 4 I've coached hundreds of content creators from Celebrity Experts to legendary musicians, world class speakers and best selling authors, all the way to emerging startups and DIY artists. I’ve been featured in most of the authority publications in my niche, as well as created and ran websites that receive tens of millions of hits, and hundreds of thousands of unique visitors.

I control my fate, my cash-flow, my lifestyle, get to choose the projects i want, and the people i serve. I also get to make my own music as a singer songwriter producer.

"Jamie Leger, thank you so much for your brilliant guidance. I am so grateful to have found you! You are making an important contribution to the world and to all the people who benefit from your leadership & wisdom :) Thank you so much!"

Patricia Panther

I’ve had the privilege of working with 100’s of clients and students at every level and have a very organic grasp and footing of the current state of our community and the surrounding artist and creative marketplaces.

I basically get to test, learn, apply and share what works at the ground level, from the front lines-across a range of interrelated communities and creators doing cool stuff in the modern world.

The amount of input, feedback and insight I get through being in direct conversation with my audience, clients, and students-from first, second and third hand experience-gives me a steady pulse for what’s working and what’s not.

In addition to the 10 years on my own and well over the 10,000 hour limit in learning, applying, and studying the greatest in the world at each particular skill I wanted to develop, I test and try each new idea on my own as well (i’m not just teaching people, I practice what I preach.) In result, I try to share the most cutting edge, advanced, proven strategies and insights for how to grow your career and fan base with you!

I had to work extremely hard, for extremely long, earn every lesson, fail many times, and sacrifice many things in life that everyone else got to enjoy in order to find my way here, to eventually develop the assets and resources, design the lifestyle, and develop the no-compromises content business i look forward to waking up to every morning.

I know that's a long intro, but my point is to comprehensively convey that our mission, our job is to directly, precisely, completely, deliver you the practical training and tools for you to build, launch, or grow your music career and content business in the modern music industry. To liberate the music business and help you and the rest of our community take back control over our industry. This is our time. This is the Artists Revolution.

Come on in. Take a seat. Get your note pad and a good pen.

Your hard work has brought you here, and it’s fun times ahead.

The reason I’m writing the Music Business Blueprint-and have made it available free to you is the same reason I’ve been creating and giving virtually all my content away for so many years… because there is a lot of misinformation, partial, incomplete, negative, hyperbolic, generic, abstract, outdated, and just plain silly advice circulating throughout these interwebs…

The 2 primary sticking points we’re seeing for the Independent Artist

Out of all the issues we've learned case-by-case for why artists stagnate or don't grow as well as they could, still the 2 largest problems that continue to entangle Artists we see (working with hundreds of them at many different levels) are-1. An ineffective strategy, and/or 2. overwhelm for what to do next.

The patterns I’ve noticed are clear, and although it’s hard for us to always see ourselves, almost all of them fit into one of only a small handful of buckets.

Again though, what’s hardest about this is that often times what would be seen as obvious-perhaps, if you were to spot it in someone else, can somehow evade our own awareness and radar!

The instructions for getting out of the box are written on the OUTSIDE of the box!

I hope to peel the curtains back a bit and show you how and what to look for-in both your own career, as well as in other artists within your circles, and then show you a better way forward.

In my experience working with so many artists and content creators over the last 10 years, i’ve learned that passion, talent, and even the driving ambition required to succeed in today’s world-are not the problem that they are struggling with most. Despite what some of the critics may surmise, it’s not typically an unwillingness to do the work, but rather-one stemming from sheer overwhelm, lack of guidance, training, and strategy for what that work should be, and what they need to do next. When you don’t know what you don’t know, then you have no baseline. You’re just sort of shooting in the dark. Do you ever feel that way?

(Note: I am not talking about those unwilling to do what it takes. Who do not or will not do the work necessary to achieve what they want with their career and their talents… That is not who we serve. I can only spend my limited amount of time and effort on those that are committed, that do the work, but typically lack an effective strategy, need to upgrade their skills, systems as well as their mindset-in most cases.)

Our extensive research + experience coaching consulting and training Artists and Creators-on all relative factors have shown us there are several core issues, as well as 5 key areas-that prevent them from getting to the next level in their career.

The several biggest challenges we see artists and their music business struggling with are…

================

Wrong Focus - Lack of guidance and effective training

—> Artists are not getting the proper skills training, guidance and business development they need to produce the fruit and value they could and would. Lack of specialized knowledge and skills training in particular as relative to marketing/promotions, fan experience pyramid setup, and sales funnel optimization.

Many Artists and Musicians think and say they need “A,” but what they really need is “B.”  For example… Artists think they need a complex website or social accounts with lots of activity… But It’s not a website, social media profile, EPK, or even mass appeal… what they need is a system that attracts interested potential new fans into loyal lifelong super fans through an interactive and largely automated set of technologies and content.

Many artists think that they need huge numbers to make a financially freeing income doing what they love, and it’s just simply not true.

We call this The I need MORE Mythology…

It’s not a new tool, gizmo, or technology…

It’s more resourcefulness and a GAME plan to leverage the tools and resources they already have.

How to do that? Read on.

===============

Ineffective Strategy

—> They lack the fundamental business training, and are not creating a strong career growth strategy, or following a practical business roadmap to build momentum and achieve consistent victories. The lack of an effective content strategy and a GAME Plan that optimizes what they've already got going, and maximizes their use of resources to build long term assets and careers.

Many artists we talk to think they need to be making more itunes sales, or that they have to earn the majority of their income through digital downloads… Again, I love Artists, I am one, and I work with them every single day… So understand that I’m not trying to press on any wounds when I say… CREATIVE Artists need to be more Creative. For real.

Traditional Artist Thinking vs. Modern Artist Thinking

People think that copying someone else’s strategy, because it worked for them will also help them breakthrough. Instead, what’s going to make them breakthrough is their integration of savvy with the tools of the modern content creator, and creative resourcefulness to communicate and connect with who they are talking to. In other words… It’s not the X,Y,Z strategy that they followed or didn’t follow anywhere near as much as it is the perspective and awareness to think in a way where everywhere they look they’d see opportunity instead of limitation.

The point isn’t that the strategy would or wouldn’t work. In some cases, it will, and that’s great. It’s simply a means to an end… But what I’m saying is that it is ALL an artistic expression, being authentic with the tools, to SAY what you came to say.

Think beyond the canvas, the media format, the distribution channel.

Non-conventional, creative expression is what modern artistry is all about, and once you understand how to use the tools and resources effectively, their’s no one more capable of connecting with and leading your tribe than you.

=============

Lack of Key Skills

->We found that They lacked the SKILLS, know-how and experience to consistently focus on the RIGHT things. Which stems from a lack of effective training, comfort, and expert guidance in leveraging the internet and the tools of modern music marketing.

Bands think they have a marketing problem… When really what they have is a communication problem. Artists aren’t hawking vacuum cleaners, used cars, or air fresheners… They are narrating and telling stories. They are sharing their soul and creating connection. They are cultural leaders and influencers. They are visionaries and represent the heart and soul of their communities. They do not need to learn how to advertise or write copy… They need to learn how to effectively use the tools of modern content marketing, to do what THEY do…

Communicate.

It’s not traditional marketing and sales skills you need to learn, it’s better communication. Modern Musicians learn to do that across the full spectrum of multi-media tools, and thus show up to their audience in high definition. The signal to noise ratio is very very high still. To your audience, having these skills developed is like twisting the knob on that ancient analog tv set, scrolling through 12 channels of static black and white noise-and then suddenly landing on a full color, clear, high definition channel.

===========

Environment

—> The lack of a well structured and optimized environment guiding them throughout the process of where they are, to where they want to be. This has a critical effect on both mental and emotional health, and is one of the biggest hindrances-which can have potentially damaging physical consequences as well. This makes it hard to build a solid foundation, improve productivity, and perform at their best.

Disorganized, haphazard, bad environment, not productive or prepared workflow structure, lacking support or accountability.

-They did not have an environment created for them to make failing HARDER than Succeeding.

============

Mindset

—> Most significantly, they lacked the Mindset, Clarity, and Focus to leverage their time and efforts on only the MOST VALUABLE activities. This showed up in any flavor of cases for the Creative Growth Trap we call Starving Artist Syndrome. Which often includes limiting beliefs about being worthy, or their own “worthiness” to succeed. Which can result in sabotage, stagnation, and overwhelm. Wrong attitude and motivating purpose. Not taking this seriously. I.E. Expecting someone owes you something. expecting someone else to do the work for you.

A deep rooted attitude or (typically unconscious) negative belief over both what marketing and sales mean, and what they have to do to do better at them. Also that they needed tons of money to earn a living and create their ideal lifestyle…

Ultimately, they feel like they are wearing too many hats, don't have a clear direction and focus and are easily distracted. They don’t know what to do next. Their are no foundational blueprints for their career and they are left with spinning wheels, overwhelm, and the lack of a clear ROADMAP.

—> The lack of a clear ROADMAP, and simplified, accountable-next steps. That eliminates the excess clutter, and focuses their attention on the the few highest leverage, highest impact activities-and nothing else clinches the W for the biggest “missing piece.”

================

These causal factors were the hidden traps, which then effected the growth of their Careers in one or more of the following ways.

5 Key areas Of Your Content Business

  1. Platform – They are not building a long-term platform, by engaging and growing their core fanbase. Not able to generate enough loyal subscribers & paying fans that support their Artistic Growth.

  2. Production – Not able to either produce, and/or TRANSLATE the value of their content effectively.

  3. Publishing – Not able to distinguish their Unique Value Positioning-the central source of their message and brand, and then successfully packaging and presenting their content.

  4. Promotion – Therefore Artists are not fully utilizing and creatively leveraging the tools and resources they have and are not able to drive targeted traffic to a sales funnel that works.

  5. Profits – Thus, not able to effectively test, track, assess, and profit from their efforts and content adequately. Performance management.

Without resolving the issues that impact each of these areas it is like driving your vehicle with the handbrake on, if not virtually impossible to grow your career effectively.

However, once these issues are removed our clients and students are able to build a sustainable career with less stress and effort.

While these are clear issues and we’ve been able to provide solutions, the Music Industry has evolved… We will be addressing what to do and how to navigate these waters, and set yourself up for a successful thriving career that endures for the long haul, in any economy.
