The fact of the matter is that their are people who write biographies for music artists day in an day out… Working WITH a professional to write your artist bio is going to give you a more professional result in most cases. But for those who cannot afford that, need to get something up right away, or want to tackle the task as the lone ranger, here are some tips to writing a better artist bio.

Remember WHO you are writing this FOR.

You are writing this for industry professionals and contacts you want to impress.

Take inventory

List out your accomplishments, goals as a musician, and everything interesting and related to your style and music.

Interview yourself

Act like you are interviewing yourself to gather information by asking yourself questions, and then write about yourself AS someone else. Or, you could ask someone else to ask you questions… of course.

Interview your friends and family

Get feedback from friends, family, and fans you know. Pay attention to and note the descriptions, phrases, and words they use.

Write about yourself in the third person

Artist bio’s are almost always written in the third person, which makes them sound more professional, and makes them sound like its not you talking about how great you are.

Structure your bio clearly and concisely

This isn't your life story, stick to your biggest achievements and accomplishments. Remember that every word should count.

Add relevant press and quotations

Be sure to include credits, accolades, quotes from industry professionals that is inline with your message.

Your artist bio is a work in progress

Remember that your bio is something that is growing and developing as you, your music and your life do.

Your bio is something that is short enough to obsess over, but don't do that. Get it as good as you can at the time, and then come back and revise, revise, revise. Get feedback from people who could help you with suggestions, ways to improve or add to it.
