How to achieve your goals in 2016
Read on if that's something you are ready for.
Well it's that time of the year again.
I’m guessing your inbox is littered with new years resolution & goal setting messages around this time%FIRSTNAME|UPPERFIRST%
-but what I’m guessing very few are talking about is perhaps the missing link in the scientific equation of your success.
Let’s explore that a little further…
HOW DO YOU THINK YOU’LL ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS and Make 2016 your breakthrough year?
From our experience, the difference between people who succeed and those that don't isn't desire, ability, or luck. The difference is that accomplished people take the initiative to equip themselves with the knowledge and tools they need for success, whilst others fail to take action.
Fairly obvious.
The first Rule of the Game is clarity and focus.
WHAT is it that you want to achieve in 2016?
Table stakes for goal achievement at any level.
STEP 1: Write Down Your Focus Area Goals
Here is a list of some areas you may want to focus on. Skip the ones that are not for you and write out each focus area goal.
Branding - Your look, your feel, your image, your health and/or your pitch.
Marketing - What will you do this year for your marketing plans?
Rick Goetz at http://musiciancoaching.com has written a great 2 part guide on how to attack a record release social media marketing plan with intention
Newsletter - Creating and sending it 12 - 24 times this year (1-2 times a month). Also getting the numbers up on your mailing list while flushing out the inactive emails addresses on the list.
Website - Building a new one, diversifying your online presence, or re-branding?
Social Networking - When was the last time you tweeted? How about making some Twitter lists and organizing your followers.
PR - Getting covered on radio, print, or online outlets. Are people talking about you in the blogosphere?
Booking - Touring or local gigs? Maybe a combination of both?
CDs & Downloads – How many would you release, distribute, and sell? What is your goal number?
Money - How much money would you honestly and realistically like to earn this year?
Film and TV Placements - Will you work towards them this year?
Expanding and Maintaining Your Fan Base - How will you focus on new fan outreach, but still acknowledge and appreciate those who have been true fans of yours for years?
Team – Will you be trying to get a manager or a booking agent?
Time – How will you manage to balance your time this year to make sure you can focus on your musical goals?
Writing & Recording – Songwriting or recording an album or EP this year?
Your Instrument - Buying a new instrument or taking lessons?
Personal Health - So your performance is better – exercise, eating healthier, etc.
After you’ve pinned down the areas of focus and targeted your goals, please make sure you don’t forget this next step…
HOW are you going to make this happen?
I’m talking strategies and an action plan.
You need a roadmap to your goal.
Here’s where things can easily and often do come off the rails.
One of the least understood and undiagnosed underlying issues I see both as an Artist, and a coach and mentor to other artists and musicians is that they have no game plan, or frame or structure to work within which could greater unlock their creativity, productivity, and find that unique balance of awesomeness we call workflow.
Let’s be very clear…
Without having a game plan or strategic action plan that maps out an optimal pathway to your success, you are hurting your chances of accomplishing your objectives next year.
Additionally, a negative, unstable, or overall bad environment will also hurt your optimal chances for success in 2016.
Career Growth Trap: Bad Environment
Contrary to the often abstract idea of structure impeding or hindering creativity, i’ve learned through much on the job, ground level experimentation-and strongly believe structure is the hidden key to upgrading and/or enhancing your productivity, and one of your biggest levers in taking your career to the next level in the modern world.
The question is though, how do we do that, and what does that really mean for us on a practical level?
1) What does that mean really? It starts with clarifying and targeting your focus, optimizing your environment, defining processes for the way you do things, and leveraging your systems to help you find, align, and maintain maximal workflow doing what you love, on your own terms.
Optimizing your environment is how you get more done, by working less, and it’s how you avoid overwhelm or uncertainty about your responsibilities or priorities. Optimizing your working structure, and finding optimal workflow delivers a renewing and refreshing confidence and inner sense of serenity without fail, every-time.
It’s quite literally an artform in and of itself. But it’s the secret behind high achievers and highly effective people in every aspect of life. It is how you reach a place we call modern artist enlightenment.
If that’s something you are interested in, keep reading.
You need a solid structure and environment
What are some things you might think of when i talk about structure?
You might think about scheduling systems or timers, or deadlines, or cheap foam dividers and filing cabinets…
But you’ll notice that everyone from the cashier that just punched in on her station, to the NFL all-star leading his team to victory, all professionals work within an operational structure that includes both an optimized environment, and a set of systems that allow them to prepare, perform, produce, and ultimately profit from their Core Focus Activities.
In the Academy, this is what we call your Main Moves.
What we’re talking about here is the precursor to finding your optimal workflow.
FINDING WORKFLOW!
An optimized working structure helps you bring everything together.
Workflow is an integrated state of Optimal performance across all the tools, functions and systems in your working structure.
The breakthrough modern musicians make happens when they realize they are not just recording and publishing new tunes.
COMPLETE career development requires growth in all 3 dimensions.
• ①Your Music - Art, message, stories, inspiration, content
• ①Your Relationships - Self, team, fans, partners
• ①Your Business - Brand operations and lifestyle
To integrate these things and enjoy optimal growth
You need a creative structure specifically built for music business owners to achieve just that.
ULTIMATELY, the whole goal is to DESIGN and structure your workflow and habits so that they actually are the exact right things, and then single mindedly focus on the one task you are doing until completion, with optimal engagement and performance.
This is how you’ll step your game up to the next level, and fulfill the optimal success you deserve!
