5 Project Management Tips
One of the most important pieces that glues my workflow together is well developed thought processes, effective decision making skills, and systemized project management.
Project management in the modern project studio is integral.
Here are 5 project management tips.
1. Have goals for each song project.
Remember… In the modern project studio the project IS the project. Make the most of it. Which skills are you working on improving? Are you working on your vocal chops, your melody writing, your production chops?
Is this a passion musical project, or is this an initiative to work on speed of production and efficiency?Remember, sometimes the goal is to just COMPLETE then project. Asking and answering these questions will put you in a small percentage of people who continue to progress at a far more accelerated pace than those who don't.
use these small goals and their achievement as stepping stones to bigger goals… Plus… when you are done, and you finish the project you'll feel MUCH better than leaving them 80% done.
2. Just keep working on something.
When in doubt just work on something….
there are always more things than time to do them, priorities are the key, but its always better to be working doi ng something, than worrying about how many things there are to do, and not knowing or being able to choose which one is the most important at this very moment in time…
just keep going.
3. Use down time to think through your project.
where are you in it? what has to happen still? refer to your objectives for the project and use them to improve your sense of urgency in completing the project.
4. Make a decision and stick to it.
this is what separates the amateurs from the professionals. experience has led me to adapt the mindset that a making a decision and then sticking to it is better than lollygagging and second guessing.
5. Know what you are doing, and why…
consciousness is the key to the development and effectiveness in your crafts and skills.
what sound is bugging you about your mix, how do you balance it or make it more pleasant to your ears? What resulting effect are you looking to achieve with the delay or reverb?
Even though we are on the cutting edge in home recording studio technology, the fundamentals never change. When in doubt rely on the basics. Don't get overwhelmed with all the gear. Be proactive, be a problem solver, specific questions get specific results.
until next time..
