3 Tips for Effective and Efficient Songwriting

Writing songs in the new music business means we need to include more pieces into our initial thought processes & arsenal of songwriting techniques.

Although it is important that we are clear on the concept and able to write good songs, i introduce a new parameter into our initial thought processes and preproduction stage.

I'm talking about the marketing end… it just has to be included. there are just too many places you can take a song, and to not have an idea of where this song could go, and where it would be best suited, is just no longer acceptable if we want to make a living these days doing what we love.

So here are 3 tips for effective and efficient songwriting.

1. Rewrite Rewrite Rewrite.

Write songs that have an emotional impact.

This might sound a bit too obvious, but don't be so quick to cast it aside… i know  i know, you get it. But another look through might show that you could evolve your song into communicating the deeper emotion you are expressing, or paint a more detailed picture of the story you are telling.

Remember, who are you talking to, and what do you want them to feel?

2. The right attitude, AND a sense of urgency.

All songs are important to you, otherwise you wouldn't write it. but don't get too attached to the song itself.

Move and create as fast as you can, but never rush. remember to maintain a sense of urgency that drives you forward. Having clear goals will allow you to push through the times that you feel stuck because the target is to COMPLETE the project, learn from it, and move on.

3. Write songs that would work in film and tv placement as well

Start thinking about the scenes your song could work in, starting from the initial stages.

Name your title appropriately. Think about the person skimming through the pile of songs in order to find a specific type of track. Match your title to the make their job easier, and for yours to stand out!

Keep your lyrics universal. zoom out if need be. instead of writing what the day was like, the day your dog died, write about and focus on communicating the feeling of loss.
